If you love vibrant neighborhoods, a rich history and culture, and welcoming neighbors, you will love living in Scotch Plains. This small New Jersey township is located on a ridge within the northern-central part of the state and is home to about 25,000 people. Among other perks, Scotch Plains boasts extensive green spaces, a rich culture, and a history going back to the Native settlements of the Lenape. If you are considering moving to this exciting enclave, here are five things you should know about it.

The Town Has a Rich History

Scotch Plains has a long and far-reaching history. While many homes for sale in Scotch Plains NJ may not go as far back as the town itself, the area was first settled in 1684. It boasts several landmarks from the Revolutionary War that you and your loved ones can visit today. The Osborn Cannonball House, for instance, is open for tours and has ties to the British and Continental troops. You can also visit Shady Rest Golf & Country Club, a former farmhouse and the first black-owned golf club in the country.

There Are Many Parks and Green Spaces

If you love being outdoors, especially if you have children, Scotch Park is a great place to set up roots. The most popular park in the town, Ponderosa Park, is a multifaceted splash pad and playground with tunnel slides, a climbing web, and other attractions for young and older children. Another option for a day outside is Brookside Park, which features multiple nature trails, tennis courts, and ball fields. For adults, Alan M. Augustine Village Green is a stunning park located downtown that boasts a gazebo, gardens, and a 9/11 Memorial, and hosts many local events.

    The Restaurants Are Family-Friendly

A long day out in the town is best capped with a visit to a family-friendly restaurant, which Scotch Plains has many. Park Avenue, in fact, is home to multiple restaurants located near free municipal parking. Head over to Grillestone on Route 22 for steaks, seafood, and weekend brunches and the Stage House Tavern for mouthwatering American meals like steaks and sandwiches. If you are in a hurry, grab the best pizza in town at Granno Pizzeria or Massa Roman Square Pizza and diner eats at Scotchwood Diner.

The Town Hosts Many Local Events and Festivals

Scotch Plains hosts a farmer’s market every Saturday Morning and residents can shop handmade gifts, baked goods, and fresh produce. This option is available from May through December and you can enjoy fun things like live music, holiday pop-up gift markets, and trick-or-treating. Outside the market scene, the town also hosts annual events like the Juneteenth celebration, and Independence Day, complete with fireworks, an Easter egg hunt, a Christmas tree lighting, and more.

There Is a Thriving Golf Scene

Scotch Plains also has a golf scene, centered around the 18-hole miniature golf facility and an adjacent nine-hole golf course. Residents can enjoy being on the greens amidst a pond, streams, and a waterfall.
